Price of student lunch goes down from 1 Jan 2023

The Government accepted the amount of the meal subsidy for 2023 on 16 Dec 2022. In the beginning of 2023, the meal subsidy amount will increase to €2.55 per meal. This change will bring down the price of a first-degree student’s lunch at UniCafes by 25 cents from 1 Jan onwards.

In practice, an increase of the meal subsidy means that from 1 Jan 2023, Kela will be paying a larger portion of a higher education student’s meal, while the part paid by the student is reduced.

There will be no changes to the maximum and minimum prices, which will remain at the level decided on 1 Oct 2022.

A lower price to encourage making sustainable choices

At UniCafe, students and staff members have long been paying €0.10 less for a vegan meal than for other lunch options. The price reduction does not apply to special meals made with more expensive ingredients.

In connection with the price amendments coming into effect in the beginning of 2023, the €0.10 cheaper price of a standard vegan meal will be extended to apply to all customer groups.

In line with the values of Ylva, who runs the UniCafe restaurants, the two-tier pricing aims to support responsible lunch choices, even though high-quality plant-based ingredients are not automatically cheaper than other ingredients.

Takeaway sales of student meals to continue until further notice

The meal subsidy can only be used for one meal per day. In the future, students can either enjoy their meal at the restaurant or buy a takeaway meal to go.

Student lunch prices from 1 Jan 2023 onwards

– vegan lunch €2.85
– other lunches €2.95
– daily special €5.15
