UniCafe’s collaboration with Green City Farm continues: fresh food from local fields in Viikki and Kumpula
UniCafe and Green City Farm will continue their collaboration for the 2026 harvest season. This year, fresh foods from local fields will be served from the beginning of August at UniCafe Biokeskus in Viikki and UniCafe Chemicum in Kumpula.
UniCafe’s customers can once again enjoy vegetables and herbs grown locally, as the partnership with Green City Farm, run by the Perho Culinary, Tourism and Business School, enters its fifth year.
UniCafe Biokeskus will receive harvests from the ecological learning field on the Malmi campus twice a week, and UniCafe Chemicum, which is new to the scheme, will take one delivery per week until the end of the harvest season.
Green City Farm’s activities combine sustainable gastronomy, horticultural production and community. Varieties of lettuce, herbs, kale, outdoor cucumber, courgette and beetroot are grown ecologically on the field.
The harvest travels only a short distance to UniCafe’s kitchens, making this collaboration a tangible example of the sustainable and seasonal use of raw materials.
”Green City Farm’s philosophy combines sustainable food production, education and community in a way that is close to us: we want to offer good food that supports the wellbeing of our customers and the sustainability of the environment. When vegetables come from local sources, only a short journey from the field to the kitchen, the origin of the food is also easier to grasp and becomes more important”, says Anne Immonen, Ylva’s CEO.
”Biodiversity and soil welfare are fundamental issues for us. At Green City Farm, we cultivate seedlings, vegetables and herbs in a climate-friendly and ecological way to preserve natural resources for future generations and to boost the consumption of vegetarian food. Our harvest is available to others in addition to our partner restaurants – products can be reserved in our online store and purchased at our farm events”, says Heidi Hovi-Sippola, a farming expert at Green City Farm.
Green City Farm’s tenth harvest season
Green City Farm is celebrating an important milestone in 2026, which marks the farm’s tenth harvest season. The anniversary will also be celebrated at the autumn Harvest Market, which will be held on the Malmi campus on Saturday 19 September.
This year, the market will be larger than usual: the programme of events includes a celebration seminar and a tasty food market where visitors can learn about delicious products prepared by culinary students and inspired by sustainable food production and international food culture.
UniCafe has worked with Green City Farm since 2022. The partnership aims to bring fresh, locally harvested foods to restaurants and strengthen the understanding of sustainable food production in practice.
